Here is the latest for the regattas this weekend. All rowers will be dismissed from class around 11:45, depart ESJ at 12, and arrive in Ortega around 12:30. The middle school kids will have their lunch at ESJ at their normal time. Upper school kids will need to bring a lunch and eat before 12:30. Your kids will take the same transportation they would normally take to the Boathouse to Ortega. The coaches will let the teachers know that your child will be leaving at 11:45. However, if your child is going to miss a test or quiz, they may want to communicate with their teacher to reschedule.
Once they arrive in Ortega, the upper school boats will practice and the middle school boats will prepare for their races. Middle school boat parent volunteers will set up the site starting at 12. We will have sandwich wraps, fruit, power bars, water and gatorades available for the kids at the site. Aronson Kagiliery will oversee the MS r...
I just wanted to give you an update on how things went today. The boys were ALL early for the bus. That is a great way to start the day.
In the morning, the 1st boats rowed pieces together, the 2nd and freshman boat rowed pieces against the Deerfield 2nd boat and our 4 went against their 4. The order of the morning was to do 3 minute pieces, but after the first two, we switched to a different part of the lake because of the wind and did 2 minute pieces. I can only report on the 1st boats, but we did 8 of these mini-races and we were very competitive, winning 3 of the 8. At the end of the morning, both boats were "gased".
After a lunch provided by Deerfield and lot of fluids from all of you, we went back out to race again. This time the pieces were going to be shorter, but ended up being 90 seconds. We did 7 of these and again they they were very competitive and even closer. We did not win the first 6, but on the last one, Spencer said...
Well, we are at the midpoint of the season, and things have begun very well. The boys have been working hard, are getting faster and seem to be having a good time.
This week, we have had three eights and a four coming to practice, and this is the group that we will take to Orlando on Saturday. Friday we will practice at 8 and again at noon. Many of the boys have been bringing a lunch or a snack for between the two rows. Tomorrow we will finish with a light row and then load the trailer, so they should be finished about 2:00. On Saturday, we will have a bus, leaving from the boathouse at 7:00, to take them to Orlando where they will row in the morning, have lunch and then row again in the afternoon. This is not really a race, but is more of a practice with Deerfield Academy from New England who are down here on their spring break. They are one of the top programs in the country, so it will be fun to work next to them. We hope to be back to our boathouse between 6 and 7....
This week, ESJ rows against Pinecrest and Bolles. For the new parents, this regatta is for fun, trophies, and a year of bragging rights. Trophies are given to the top MV1 and WV1 boats only.
Sorry for the delay with information and change in signup genius. One of the other teams had a huge scheduling issue that delayed our end. If you signed up to help, please check the signup genius for time changes.
Should be beautiful weather. The upper boat rowers need to arrive at 7am and middle school boat rowers 9:30am. Races start at 9:30 with the MV1 race and ends at 11:30 with some exciting middle school races against Bolles.
After the regatta, all of the upper boat rowers will be expected to head to the boathouse to unload the trailer. Coach Alton assures me that it will be quick. We also need a few parents to help unload the hospitality trailer. This is great for the parents that have to go the boathouse to pick up their...
There is a lot going on Friday, between Grandparent's Day and the kids taking off for their first away regatta. We will depart at 12:15 on Friday from the Buck on two buses. School lets out at 11:30am for Grandparent's Day. Rowers can attend, but need to be on the bus by 12:15.
Rowers not attending Grandparent's Day need to bring a bag lunch for Friday and should bring a full water bottle. We will provide a snack for the bus.
There have been questions regarding the kid's overnight bags and kid's backpacks. Your kids should bring everything with them to school. They know where to store them. Backpacks can go down with them to Orlando. You do not need to make a special trip to the school. Some of the kids do their homework on the bus or at the regattas while they are hanging out. You do not need to be there to see your kids off.
They will head down to the race site to rig and practice and then t...

Monday and Tuesday, Mike will be taking videos of our seniors and additional videos for our end of the year banquet. This next part applies to only our upper school boats. We need every boy that rows on an upper boat to wear their unisuit on Monday. On Tuesday, the girls need to wear theirs. The coaches sent out a note to the kids, but please remind them. This will be Mike's only chance to film in the chase boats.
Saturday was a beautiful day for a regatta. To see videos of all the races, visit our Jacksonville Episcopal Rowing website and select "rowing videos."
A special thank you to Dalton Direct Carpet (Angie & Michael Rukab) for donating our very cool new custom logo tablecloth. You guys are awesome. Our regatta area will really stand out now.
Upper School OARS
I will send out information on our Orlando regatta tomorrow. I can tell you that the bus will leave at 12:15 on Friday. Kids will be able to celebrate Grandparents Day f...
There are just a few things. For States you must have the same number of volunteers per number of races. We needed 10 and we have 10 volunteers. A special "Thank You" to John Gallo, Mark LaBorde, Matthew Thompson, Jason Centrella (for two slots), Wyke Hampton, Laura Leigh Haynes, Joe Ryals, Kit Washburn, & Kevin Bodge. You guys are awesome!!!
Thank you for all our parent volunteers. We only have three more slots to fill. We REALLY need two more to help load the trailer today from 3:15-4:15 and one to update the race board from 1-2:30 tomorrow. We are loading early today to avoid the 5 o'clock traffic. If you can help, please sign up and if you can't sign up and find yourself free, please stop by.
Kids need to arrive at 7:30am Saturday morning..setup volunteers 7:15. The coaches want to have food & drinks available right away for the kids. They are putting the dock together and it's hard work....
